FEATURE OF THE WEEK

Here at The valley hot spot we like to find and interview future stars in the making. I recently had the privilege of interviewing one of newburgh's budding and aspiring screenwriter; 22 yr. old, Alysia "Alist" Mazzella, the creator of the new short film,"Incalculable." Below are Alysia "Alist" Mazzella's answers to the questions that I thought would be most helpful screenwriters, both aspiring and professional.

September 25th 1-2PM @ DOWNING FILM CENTER 19 FRONT STREET NEWBURGH, NY 12550

Tell us about your latest project,"Incalculable" starring Julien Delbassée Leflon releasing September 25th, 2011 at the Downing Film Center.  What can people expect from your debut film?
Alysia: My short film directorial debut "Incalculable" is a drama which travels through multiple internal emotions. I wrote the screenplay and directed the film, along with my company, Secret Rabble, doing the entire production. The original soundtrack was created by Elevated Genius.

Tell me about yourself and how you got into directing?

Alysia: When I was in elementary school my mom bought me a video camera. I would create short films and recreate daytime television with my friends–never really thinking about it seriously. I attended Newburgh Free Academy for high school and I got into interviewing/filming/editing through our the televised morning broadcast course, GBTV (Goldback Television). After I graduated, I did a lot of networking and continued to study communications and media in college. My first music video directorial debut was for MeLo-X "Orgasmic Audio" January 2010. I still do full in-house production for music videos, but I'm currently focusing on studying visual arts, screenwriting and directing.

How long did it take you to write and film the project?

Alysia: My company, Secret Rabble, started producing the film Spring 2011. I'm very thankful for my past experience curating shoots and events, because the    pre and post-production was surprisingly smooth! We knocked out the shoot in one day. My lead, Julien Delbassée Leflon, is an amazing actor and super successful at translating everything I wrote into real emotion.

How did you come up with the film's story?

Alysia: I was mainly inspired by personal experiences. I was focused on making "Incalculable" relate-able, unexpected, and thought-provoking material.

Are the actors in the film local actors from the area?

Alysia: Kind of! Julien, the lead actor is originally from France, but he lives in New York now.

What was the mood and atmosphere on set?

Alysia: As I stated, there is lots of emotions in the short film. So sometimes, we would take a few moments to allow Julien to transition from one emotion to another. We also played to the soundtrack to really enhance the connection between the visuals and the audio.

Where did you film the movie?

Alysia: I filmed the movie in the town of Newburgh, New York.

What is the theme of the movie?

Alysia: It is a drama.

What were some down moments when the project had stalled or you thought it might never come to fruition? How did you overcome them?

Alysia: I always knew I would make a directorial debut, but the question was when. I originally aspired to debut a different screenplay that I wrote, but things didn't work out with my aspired lead actor. I view some delays as an opportunity for improvement, so I focused my energy on "Incalculable" since I already had most of it's pre-production ready to go...and wha-la we're here today.

What's your favorite movie of all-time and who is your favorite director?

Alysia: I don't have a favorite director, I really just enjoy to watch independent films. But one of my favorite movies has to be "Donnie Darko".

At what age did you get the writing bug?

Alysia: I wrote a few short books when I was younger for fun, I also write poems sometimes. Writing was always fun and undemanding for me. I did find a folder from fourth grade though, where I said I wanted to have a career as a writer.

I'm excited to attend the "Incalculable" screening. What can we expect from you in the future?

Alysia: More original short films and music videos! I am also independently releasing a short story book, I'm not rushing it so it will take some time. Right now I'm still compiling my original short stories and poems.

Any advice to other film makers out there who are scared to pursue their dreams?

Alysia: No matter what negative thoughts may pass through your mind, no matter what anyone says–if you feel it, believe it!

Any shout outs and where can people follow you at?

Alysia: I want to thank my mom Toni Jo, my brother David, script supervisor Jayna Martinez, and hair and make-up artist Taylor Burke for helping me make my dreams come true. I unconditionally appreciate all the support from my friends and family.
